KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) -- Medics from the Kenosha Fire Department were returning from a call when they saw flames shooting from the roof of a house, then ran inside and saved five sleeping people.

Officials say Sunday that although there were smoke alarms in the living spaces, there weren't any in the attic.

Battalion Chief Matthew Haerter says the people rescued early Saturday were "extremely fortunate" the medics were in the right place at the right time.

Kenosha's medical units are staffed by firefighters certified as paramedics or emergency medical technicians. They carry basic firefighting gear.

Haerter says they were bringing out the two adults and three children when the first of the fire crews arrived on the scene.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.
