BATON ROUGE, La. - Authorities say a woman was killed in apartment fire in Baton Rouge on Sunday.

The Advocate, citing a news release from the Baton Rouge Fire Department, reports the fire occurred in the living room of a unit at the Newport Villa Apartments, and two people were rescued from the blaze.

Officials say the fire started about 7:40 a.m. from an unattended cigarette. Officials say 65-year-old Lizzie Simond, who was in the room where the fire started, was killed.

The fire spread through the building, setting the staircase ablaze and trapping two people upstairs.

Officials say in the release firefighters set up ladders and pulled one person from the outside hallway railing and another from the window of her bedroom.
