The best advice I can give you is this; First, get your EMT-basic....don't let anything interfere with that. At the same time, look into fire academies at your local community colleges. start taking any fire class you can get into as well as once you obtain your EMT-Basic, start working for an ambulance company. Really get comfortable with your skills as an EMT since in most places, 85-95% of all calls are medical in nature. Also look into the "Explorer" program through your local fire agencies. They train you in fire fighting techniques and also build a relationship with the department so that they will help you become a firefighter and possibly a part of their department. After at least a year of being an EMT-Basic, then look around for a paramedic school/academy. I will say this from personal experience....don't short change the time that you're an EMT-Basic. what you learn in that year will be invaluable when it comes time to move on to the paramedic level. Good luck with your career/life goals. We are all here to help anytime!
