I am a retired Vol Fire fighter of 30 + years service & hold a Certificate in Fire Technology & one in Horticulture 2
Recently i combined the knowledge of these two to make a web page.
www.fireretardantplants.co.nr
It is basically for Australian conditions but there may be some information that will be of use to other countries.
We move people into hilly terrain so they can enjoy the surroundings & views,  but many of these areas are of a very high fire danger, so we can lower the risks by planting less flammable trees, shrubs or groundcovers.
Sure many of the so named "Greenies" may say  we must preserve the native vegetation as it was in the past  but we have altered the area just by being there.
So let fire services & greenies work together have compromises that keep trees & shrubs yet over decent protection to those who choose to live in such areas.
Any comments on the web page can be made by using the link to my email
