PHOENIX - A disabled woman suffered second- and third-degree burns as she helped her wheelchair-dependent husband out of their Phoenix apartment during a fire.

Fire crews arrived at the scene of a fire about 4 a.m. Tuesday on the first floor of the Beverly Palms apartment complex near 19th Avenue and Bethany Home Road.

Donald Biddle says his wife was attempting to drag him out of the apartment complex.

The Arizona Republic says Biddle is a veteran of the Vietnam War who has multiple sclerosis and uses a wheelchair to get around.

Authorities say a misplaced cigarette may be to blame for the fire, which caused extensive damage to one apartment but didn't spread to any other units.
