PHOENIX - Phoenix police are talking to several children after a three-alarm fire ripped through a Phoenix apartment complex early Monday morning. Police are investigating a total of three fires that authorities believe were set.
The apartment fire started before 5 a.m. near 15th and Highland Avenues, south of Camelback Road, in Central Phoenix.
The fire was pumping thick black smoke into the air and was visible for miles. More than 100 firefighters were called out.
There are dozens of buildings in the development. The two-story structure that was burning reportedly was about to be remodeled so it was fenced off. No one was supposed to be living there, but firefighters were searching to make sure the building was indeed empty. Neighbors said they saw some kids lighting grass on fire near the apartment complex.
Phoenix police spokesman Detective James Holmes said a total of five children are being questioned.
