PHILADELPHIA - As many as 30 people have been burned from there homes after a two-alarm fire ripped through an apartment building on the corner of 45th and Walnut streets shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday.
According to the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross, 15 units were affected by the blaze, and 12 of them were destroyed.
A service center had been established to provide assistance to those displaced, a spokesperson said, and six people were being assisted with temporary housing.
City Deputy Fire Chief Michael Wahl said firefighters rescued five people from the fourth floor of the four-story building using ladders. He said one person inside of the building was brought to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she was listed in stable condition. A firefighter was also brought to the hospital to be treated for a cut to his hand, Wahl said.
City Fire Battalion Chief Mike Kane praised the work of the firefighters in battling the blaze and rescuing people from the upper level of the building.
“It was unbelievable,” said Kane. “For the amount of fire there was, and the number of rescues that were happening, these guys did an outstanding job.”
The fire was declared under control nearly an hour after it was reported. Wahl said fire crews arrived on scene within four minutes of it first being reported. The cause of the fire was under investigation Thursday night with the city fire marshal’s office.
Saad’s Halal Restaurant is located on the ground floor of the building.
A Red Cross spokesperson said people wishing to make donations could do so through the organization’s website .
