PHILADELPHIA - It appeared hopeless when an elderly woman who was pulled from a house fire on Horrocks Street had no vital signs. But this story out of Frankford has a heroic ending.

With some quick action by the emergency medical technicians at the scene and the doctors at Temple University Hospital, she's now expected to make a recovery.

The woman is listed in critical but stable condition.

Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers said the family did everything right in this situation.

"They had a home excape plan. Of course their condition kind of impeded the exit of the female," Ayers said. "Her husband gave her strict instructions on what to do, keeping her head out the window, making sure that she got the air, that the firefighters were coming, that the firefighters got here. They got in, they pulled her out, they saved her life."

The commissioner also says the couple had working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in every room.

Fire investigators are still looking into the cause of that fire.

It is so refreshing to hear that there are people out there that "Do everything right". I have lost count on the number of posts I have read or commented on where there were fatalities because the basics, smoke detectors and escape plans, simply werent in place.
Congratulations Philly FD. I am willing to bet this lady's house was not in one of the brown out areas that night. I'm just saying...
