A fire that swept through a home in Williamsport claimed the life of the man who lived there.

Firefighters were called to a home in the 600 block of Grace Street shortly after noon Thursday. Heavy smoke could be seen pouring from the building.

Five people lived in the home, Kenneth Seagraves, his fiancé and their three daughters. Seagraves' fiancé was at work when the fire started. The three girls were at school.

Seagraves' relatives were at the scene all afternoon and tried to reach him on his cell phone but they noticed his truck was parked in front of the house. They spent the afternoon hoping for a miracle, but expecting the bad news that was delivered to them.

Neighbors report thick smoke filled the air. Shortly after firefighters entered the burning home to search for Seagraves they were forced out when it appeared the roof and the second floor were about the collapse. "The roof area started collapsing in. We pulled all the fire crews out of the structure at that time and went to a defensive attack on the fire," said Williamsport Deputy Fire Chief Dave Dymeck.

"You couldn't see anything, there was smoke and there was flames coming out of the sides," said neighbor Sara Thomas.

Firefighters found the body of Seagraves around 4:30 p.m. He was in the Navy for several years and recently retired to Williamsport.

Seagraves lived next to Steve Stugart's father, whose health was in decline. He said Seagraves always looked out for his dad.

"In fact, Kenny is the one who found him the last time my dad had to be rushed to the hospital. Kenny's the one that was able to break into the house, call 911 and get someone here to get my father the hospital," said Stugart. His father passed away last week and Seagraves was at the funeral, to once again, offer help.

"He was a pallbearer yesterday morning at the funeral," said Stugart. "This is unbelievable, I can't believe it."

There is no word yet what sparked the fire. Investigators are trying to determine exactly what caused the fire.
