SCRANTON, Pa. - A former northeastern Pennsylvania volunteer firefighter will spend at least 10 years in prison for a string of arsons that caused millions of dollars in damage.
Former Whites Crossing volunteer firefighter Benjamin B. Christensen was sentenced Tuesday in Lackawanna County Court. He pleaded no-contest to arson charges in September.
Authorities say the Carbondale resident set five fires and conspired with another man in two others between February 2007 and March 2008. Co-defendant Robert Woolaver Jr. is serving a four- to 16-year sentence.
A volunteer firefighter suffered a heart attack while battling one of the blazes.

This is the extreme example of getting into the fire service (volunteer) for the wrong reason...for the action. Volunteer to help your community and to serve, not to get your damn jollies.
10 Years? This Son of a Basket will be laughing and dancing all the way to the State Pen. If Pennsylvania is a 2/3 state that mean that this guy will do 6 1/3 and be let go if he behaves. A total of 7 fires and what should have been an attempted murder charge and all he gets is 10 years? I bet the outcome would have been different had it been 7 roberies and a shot cop. I sure hope that the Fire Service in Lackawanna County makes sure that the D.A. is serving his last term in office.
Ten years for this type of terrorism isn't enough.
States need to look at what happens when fires are intentionally set and stop treating them like illegal parking.
There is HATE and TERRORISM in a person who sets fires. Regardless of why, the public has a right to be protected from them.
LOOOOOOONG sentences will deter fire setting.
Slaps on the wrist only encourages it and certainly doesn't do anything to even begin to address the problem.
oh,no, make no mistake. Those are not firemen. Those are evil doers wearing a firefighter mask. Agreed, 10(6.3) years is hardly enough for this crime. A firefighter almost dies by this guy's hand and he gets a slap. He should have got 10 years for each fire.
