Firefighters in Lycoming County are grieving one day after one of their own died on his way to a deadly crash.
Friends said the 20-year-old volunteer was doing what he loved when he lost his life in a high-speed crash.
Friends and fellow firefighters considered Richard Springman family and said his death in the line of duty is a huge loss.
A flag flies at half staff outside the Trout Run Volunteer Fire Company and the sign explains so much about the difficult loss people here are dealing with.
"It hurts. We all miss him. I mean, we're never going to forget him," said volunteer firefighter Calvin Irvin
Wednesday, state police said Springman, a volunteer with the fire company in Trout Run, was responding to a deadly crash on Route 15 north of Williamsport when he lost control of his truck and crashed.
Springman died at the scene.
"Put my gear on, my other buddy told me to stop, said look whose truck it is. I lost it there. Then we were called back to the station," Irvin added.
He is the same age as Springman and spent the day after the crash helping others clean vehicles at the fire department. For many there Springman's sudden death is still setting in.
"He was more than a friend to me, he was a brother. I not only lost a fellow firefighter, but I lost a sibling too," said volunteer firefighter Ryan Long.
"It is a total loss, so we grieve for everyone. We ask for everyone to pray for us," said fire company chaplain Marlin "Doc" Remick.
Members of the tight-knit fire company said the whole Springman family is involved in the department. In fact many watched Richard Springman grow into the strong, selfless man they will always remember. The man who died on his way to help others.
"It's a young life, with his whole life ahead of him yet," Remick added.
"A lot of friends lost a great firefighter, great kid," said volunteer firefighter Josh Phillips.
Troopers said Springman was not wearing a seatbelt when he crashed, and mention speed likely played a role.
Firefighters said plans are in the works to remember the young volunteer who would have turned 21 years old Monday.
