I know many in this forum are volunteers, however I would like to ask ALL...What do you think about firefighters having pay frozen, or paycutts in order to avoid lay-offs in these horrible economic times?
If the price is to save a brothers job, I would consider a pay freeze, but I am not sure about a pay cut. Firefighters don't make the money they should in the first place.
Thats for sure! I know of at least one department that decided to take a 1% pay cut and I believe that CDF in California has taken a pay cut as well. Its a tough situation. You WANT to keep everybody employed and the houses open...however...how much of this is due to mis-management by government officials?????
I like your reply Cannon. One of my thoughts has been to supplement paid firefighters with volunteers. I know it's a union and labor issue. But these are hard times. Think of all the opportunity and experience that could be picked up by these new volunteers. training, education, and hands on work. Being on an equal level with the paid firefighters...thus giving us a "pool" to test from when we all get mack to 'hiring' again. Im not saying paid is better or vollie is better, but a TRUE combination department where everyone is on that perverbial equal playing field
Something has to be done as a whole in this society to get us out of the "I want it, so I get it" mentality. Unfortunately it has to start at the top to make it effective. you cant always expect the "front-line" or "entry level" or whatever to take the hit as the fat cats get bigger.
I know that there would be alot of issues to work out, such as how many paid to volunteer ratio per shift or apparatus or whatever...but it seems to make sense!
I think I would rather have a pay freeze / cut just to make sure we have enough personnel in order to not endanger our Brothers an Sisters any further.
A pay cut is nasty, the loss of a job is far worse. I don't like the sound of either. Employees in all sorts of areas are feeling it, though mostly employees on the lower ranks. We had the CEO of a large company receive about a 150% pay rise, plus huge bonuses, just as she announced that the company was shutting down all it's local manufacturing plants and sending the work to Asia. She certainly isn't feeling the 'pinch'.
