Need some hard facts and info on going to and passing the 1001, 1002 certification at the Mississippi Fire Academy. How much of the course is classroom, live fire excercises, and physical fitness? How long should I give myself to be academy ready concerning physical conditioning and what excercises should I focus on? Also do the instructors explain very well in detail what you are expected to do, do they give more than one chance to perform any required demonstrations, or do you get 1 chance only? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Having gone through the MSFA and several courses over the years, I'll try to give you some advice. The basic class.... ahhh where to start... given the chance I'd do it again. It's all pretty much balanced out as far as classroom, skills, and PT. More time in the classroom over the other 2. You'll do 3 physical assesments, weeks 1, 3, & 6. Focus on cardio and stamina, don't worry about the weight lifting. There's several people of all ages from 18 to mid to late fifties (even early 60's I've heard). Anybody can do it, we had a 290 pound guy in our class that walked the dog on some of the "top notch in shape" guys. They have a great team of Certification Instructors up there that are some of the best instructors I've had the pleasure of being in their class. Skills tests goes as follows you get 10 minutes OR two attempts to complete a skill. Skills tests consist or randomly drawn skills usually 5 to 6 per week. You'll do 2 to 3 chapters per day and do the written test the following day. In the basic class though, it's almost like basic training in the military. You'll be treated like probies and rookies without a drop of knowledge. The best advice I can give from personal experience is to sit down, shut up, and do what you gotta do. Teamwork is KEY if the class is going to catch a break sooner rather than later. PAY ATTENTION to detail is the second piece of advice, the class is a team and everything must be uniform, if one is out of place the whole class is out of place. Try to keep the individualism to a minimum if not nonexistent. Finally please don't let my words discourage you, it's all to make you be prepped for what you may encounter. I will recommend the experience to anybody, I still talk to my classmates who range anywhere from Petal to West Point, Senatobia, Ridgeland, etc all over the state. You'll have a lot of fun throughout the course, but when you're on the instructors time stay sharp and always pay attention.
Also 1002 is Driver/Operator, I'm assuming you'll be taking it after the double 01 class? Same thing... 2 weeks couple chapters a day, test afterward. Skills 10 minutes or 2 attempts. No PT during the driver class though. The Extension Instructors are a great team of teachers as well.
Thanks Nick for the info, trying to get all the info I can so I can do great at the Academy.

Thanks
