What if anything does your departments do if you have a member who has little or no participation? Volunteering is what we do but we have people who depend on us. When do they get put on inactive list or are taken off the department? Does any other departments have this problem? We have taken over 10 people off the department in the past year because of inactivity. These people are usually the ones who want to say "look at ME i am a firefighter" but when the tones drop they are no where to be found. Inactivity is not just during runs, but meetings, trainings, and special events.

Right on, same here, we also got a 3 strike and your out rule.
As stated by others, we have a Brigade rule that requires members to attend 50% of training, meetings cleaning duty days and calls. The tallies take into account the individual's work requirements - shift work, travelling etc. If you really want to be a volunteer, the 50% can't be seen as onerous. The concept is to have officers talk with people who aren't meeting their obligations, and try to get them to smarten up a bit. Failure to improve will have people given restriction - ie, only allowed on the first truck out if there's insufficient crew. Failure to imrove ove a year will see a request for resignation. Problem is, the rule isn't being followed by Brigade management, so we too have people who turn up only when they feel like it, who turn up only to the calls that look like they might be interesting.
Interesting rule never thought it out that way thanks for the response.
sounds fair
Good luck to you guys seems a lot of dept face this issue
Well trainings is the only thing that you guys rate things on which believe me is one if not the most important things, just seems like its an ongoing issue in a lot of dept
I like the fact you take into consideration their work cause that is their livelyhood.
I agree to a certain extent till you have your active recruits start dying off because they don't feel any respect.
We have to make 10% of our runs for the year. The Chief checks out everyone's percentages in June to see if anyone is falling behind and gives them a call to talk to them about it. At the end of the year anyone who hasn't made the 10% has to go in front of the board of directors and explain their position and if they wish to continue being on the dept. or if they feel maybe they should just hang it up. 1st responders have it a little tougher since we have more of those runs and they do count against them if they don't make them. If you are just a firefighter then they don't count against you but they can help you, kinda like extra credit. Also training and fundraisers or any other function is counted as a run and counts toward your 10%. As for our training we have to have 2 hours every 2 months. That's it. Pretty easy to do and not too strict.
At the time of their selection, a candidate needs to be told about the commitment that must be made to meetings, training and special events. After that is done, have them sign an acknowledgement form that they have read and understand. Then, it should come as no surprise if they are suspended or terminated for attendance.
When we train, we train for US first. It is what will make you effective and keep you and the others safe.
Meetings and special events attendance is important, because of the social aspects. Missing meetings tells the others that you are different/better than they are. It tells them that your time is more important than their time is. It may send a signal that you don't like spending time with them.
People miss meetings, training and special events because they are allowed to. Have written policies to address it. Have everyone sign off on them.
Then, go back and look at your meetings and training. Are they productive? Worthwhile? Or is it alot of sitting around with little to do with firefighter skill sets?
Absenteeism will kill the morale of the others. You need to fix it.
TCSS.

Well D&D we send a letter to them to see if they still want to be active if not we drop them to inactive list to help with fund drives or small things in the station and if they dont help out there we make them what we call shit house members but we do try to get them back up to active status but if this all fails we drop them from co.rolls
Thanks! Do you guys have a lot of trainings offered it seems we go through bursts of training and down to minimal?
