WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - As the four year anniversary of the Sofa Super Store disaster approaches, the city is working to turn the site into a memorial for the nine Charleston firefighters who died there.

Long-term plans for a permanent memorial and fire department building where the store once stood are unfunded and still years away. But in the meantime, the city is creating a grass-covered landscaped site with memorial markers for the 9.
Once the work is complete, there will be a 25 foot flagpole with an etched storyboard at the base of the flag.
There will be diamond plated site markers and several benches around the site.
A more fitting memorial for the 9 would be a training center with their images or life-size statues in a main lobby, to remind present and future members what is at stake each and every time they respond to an call, so that this type of incident never happens again. It would also be a proper memorial to hold those that showed such disregard for modern training in the many years before the incident, accountable; criminally, civilly, and financially. The conflicts of interest in this case are numerous, and deplorable.
My prayer continues to be for all the survivors of that fire!
Daniel, I agree with your idea, a memorial training center would be a great idea if Charleston does not have a modern training facility at this time, but are memorials not only to remind those that follow in the footsteps, but also so that others do not forget? I think I can see the baseline quasi "pr" idea here. Not only have a Department building in honor to OUR fallen, but for the citizens of Charleston, a reminder about THEIR fallen heros. As far as the legal part of it goes, I have not followed that enough to know what is going on, other then from experience, law suits and judgements and criminal prosecution sometimes takes time, and sometimes the bad guys get away and leave a pigeon to take the heat. IF any of the Charleston folks read this, I hope the families are doing okay, both the ones of blood and the ones of badge. TC SS and Nuff Said.
I think you have a great idea there, seeing that the citizens lost some of their heroes as well. It would be appropriate to keep that in their thoughts too. Stay safe too!
