One Dead, Two Injured In Arkansas Retirement Complex Fire

FORT SMITH, Ark. - Authorities in Fort Smith say one person is dead and two others injured after a fire at an apartment complex for retired people.

Fire officials told Fort Smith television station KFSM that Gordon G. Harris died in the 1:30 p.m. Sunday fire at the apartments on Rogers Avenue.

Investigators say the fire started at the stove in Harris' apartment and spread to pieces of furniture. It was unclear whether Harris died from the fire or whether he died from an illness. Two elderly residents were hospitalized for smoke inhalation.

The complex houses 115 residents, who had to be evacuated. The residents were back in their homes by 5 p.m.

Fire and smoke damage was confined to Harris' apartment.
