HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Macomb County authorities say a man who liked to smoke even though he used an oxygen machine died in a fire at the motel he's lived in for the past 15 years.

Sheriff Mark Hackel tells The Detroit News the fire early Thursday damaged two units of the Ruth Motel in Harrison Township.

Hackel says the victim is in his 50s, but did not otherwise identify him.

The sheriff says the victim smoked while using the oxygen machine, and investigators believe that combination caused the fire.

Firefighters evacuated the motel, and no other injuries were reported in the fire, which occurred just after midnight.

WXYZ-TV says the victim's room is destroyed, and there is smoke and water damage to a handful of other units.
