Prince George's County firefighters were called to the Carriage Hill Apartments about 4:30 a.m. Saturday and found heavy fire and thick smoke. Residents were trapped by heat and smoke in a stairwell and retreated to their balconies.

Fire department spokesman Mark Brady says the fire quickly spread from the ground floor to the building's roof.

A 27-year-old man was found dead in the apartment where the blaze likely started. Three civilians and three firefighters were taken to hospitals with minor injuries.

About 100 firefighters and rescuers were called to the three-alarm blaze. Brady says it was under control by 7 a.m.

At least 24 families are displaced.
