Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford says the fire appeared to start on the top floor of a 5-story building around 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
He says firefighters rescued several people who were trapped inside the building which also houses some businesses.
The fatality was found inside the apartment.
Langford says one person jumped from the building and was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Two others hospitalized were reported in serious and good condition.
It took firefighters about 20 minutes to put out the blaze.
Fire investigators haven't determined the cause of the fire.
