One Child Dead, Another Critical After Kansas City Apartment Fire

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A young child was killed, and an infant has been taken to a hospital in critical condition after a blaze at a northeast Kansas City apartment.

The Kansas City Star reports that two adults also were seriously injured in the blaze, which was reported around 11:17 a.m. Monday.

Upon arrival firefighters were told two children were still in the upstairs apartment. Officials say the children were brought out of the two-story structure within 10 minutes.

Kansas City Fire Chief Smokey Dyer says it appears the building did not have any smoke detectors.

The owner of an import business on the first floor of the building says a passerby saw smoke and warned workers to get out.
