Old and odd roofing
Pardon the poor picture. Doing some contractor work in an apartment attic space. This roof is just 1x6 slates with roof tile hooked onto the slates. No sheeting, no paper no nothing. Wondering if anyone has come across this before while venting. Seems like a really dangerous(not implying roof work isn't) building construction practice. This building is 30-40 years old.

I don't know about that roof design, but my department had a structure fire the other night. It was an old military house built in the late 40s to mid 50s. The original roof was low pitch 1x8 slats and shingles. The second roof was built on top of it with trusses built up, leaving a sizable gap between. The ventilation attempts were not effective at first because we did not know about the double roof. Fire originated outside on the back deck and ran up the wall, into the soffit and ate the underside of the upper roof. Very little fire was inside the house because it was trapped between the 2 roofs.

Not dangerouse just different, if you went to Europe you'd find most roofs built like this. This type of roof is not air tight but it is water tight, meaning that the rain doesn't get in but it can "breath". You'll notice that it doesn't have air vents because they aren't needed.
Now, when it comes to getting onto the roof, that's a different matter. These roof can be a death trap if you're used to working "normal" roofs. You don't climb onto then without a roof ladder, but if you need to vent you just rip the tiles off and, carefull of who and what's bellow, drop them.

This would explain the names of the 2 complexes. Essex Manor and Windsor Heights. Use British building techniques for a 'themed' complex.

I'm not sure of the history of this building. It may be a little older than 40. Some of the appliances look late 60's to me. Maybe they had shake shingles before. I was talking to the bldg inspector while he was on property and it doesn't meet current codes for sure.
