OH&S Standards for Fire Departments
Ok guys, I'm sure someone on here could help me out on this one. I live up here in Canada, in the provinces, yes i said provinces....our town borders on the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan, and I've been looking around on the websites for both AB and SK to see what, if any, are the OH&S (Occupational Health & Safety) regulations a fire department has to follow. If anyone has any info they can pass on would be greatly appreciated. (This thread may have already been started, and yes i did search for it and couldn't find anything, but if so, sorry in advance :-) )

Here in Ontario the regular Occupational Health and Safety Act applies. There are exceptions on the "refusal of unsafe work" for FD personel where we cannot refuse unsafe work in specific situations (like interior search in an IDLH situation).
We also have what is commonly called "Section 21" which is named after the section of the act that allows for special cases like us in the fire service to make up our own guidlines that will be enforced as if it were law.

Ask your chief, training officer or safety officer. Likely your hall has a OSH board with the act posted there. It's law in Ontario to have that. If you don't for some reason, call the government and ask. Or ask around at a Mutual Aid meeting. Do you have a provincial fire college like we do in Ontario? THEY would know for sure!
