Ohio Firefighters Use 10-Foot Pole to Rescue Toddler from Septic Tank

Associated Press

WATERFORD, Ohio--Authorities in Ohio say a toddler fell into a septic tank and was critically injured while being watched by a woman putting up outdoor Christmas lights.

Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks says firefighters used a 10-foot pole Tuesday to rescue 2-year-old Benson Baker. They hooked him and pulled him out of the tank outside the woman's home in Waterford, 80 miles southeast of Columbus.

The woman was watching both Benson and a 3-year-old sibling. Mincks tells The Marietta Times the older child yelled that Benson was gone, and the woman found the tank with its cover partially off and the boy inside.

The sheriff says Benson was not breathing when he came out of the tank but was revived. The boy was flown to a hospital in Columbus in critical condition.
