New Smryna Beach Fire Rescue authorities are crediting an off duty firefighter and paramedic for saving an 84-year-old man's life.

Off duty firefighter Billy Crapps was grabbing a cup of coffee Sunday when he smelled smoke at a nearby residence and auto parts shop. He called 911 and helped 84-year-old Al Sanford out of the home. When the ambulance arrived, paramedic Mike Sanford realized the elderly man coming out of the burning home was his grandfather.

Once out of the home, the elderly man went into cardiac arrest and collapsed. Mike Sanford used a defibrillator to bring him back to life and transported him to the hospital where he is expected to recover.
