A worker at West Oahu's Campbell Industrial Park died when a 120-foot cement cooling tower collapsed on top of him.
The man was employed by A.G. Transport of California. He was working locally with Sans Construction of Hawaii to demolish the tower for Hawaii Cement.
Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Robert Main says two men were weakening the structure Saturday in preparation for the demolition when they heard a "pop or creak."
Main says the men began to leave the tower, but one man turned back, possibly to retrieve a tool. That's when the tower collapsed.
About 70 people removed tons of steel rubble from the demolition pile to help with the rescue effort.
Main says Hawaii Cement is clearing out the Kalaeloa facility because it no longer manufactures cement at the site.
