SALISBURY, N.C. (AP) -- Salisbury firefighters have remembered two colleagues killed fighting a lumberyard blaze a year ago with a ceremony at a memorial and a moment of silence.
Nineteen-year-old Justin Monroe and 40-year-old Victor Isler were killed a year ago Saturday as they fought a fire that destroyed much of Salisbury Millwork.
A public service also is planned.
The North Carolina Department of Labor fined Salisbury $6,563 for safety violations, including letting Monroe enter the building alone.
But inspectors also said the fire department did much more right than wrong in fighting the blaze.
WSOC-TV reports that fire officials have asked the city to buy new radios because some firefighters trapped in the building couldn't get mayday calls to go through.
