CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Three North Carolina firefighters are recovering from burns after testing a substance taken from the home of two brothers suspected of building an explosive pen that hurt a classmate
Multiple media outlets reported Tuesday that the home search led Charlotte bomb squad officials to order evacuations for more than two dozen homes and one business as they searched the house for more explosives. Residents returned home late Monday.
Officials said three firefighters suffered minor injuries from an explosion as they conducted a field test at the scene.
The exploding pen sent a 15-year-old student at Turning Point Academy to the hospital and forced authorities to evacuate the school for a time.
Police arrested a 16-year-old student at the school and his 15-year-old brother.
