ISELIN, N.J. -- Authorities say an 88-year-old man suffered severe burns in an overnight fire at a New Jersey senior citizen apartment building.

Police say Godhanbhai Patel was found inside his first-floor apartment at the Cooper Towers building shortly after 1 a.m. Friday. He was flown to Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, where he was listed in critical condition.

Nearly 100 other residents of the five-story building were evacuated. One was taken to JFK Medical Center in Edison for treatment of smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.

Fire Chief Mike Einhorn said the fire was contained to Patel's first-floor apartment. He said the cause appears to be electrical.
