ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - A family of four is in hospital with serious injuries after leaping out of a third-storey window to escape a fire in the Newfoundland capital early today.

Police say the blaze broke out at a home around 1 a.m.

The victims' injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Firefighters were quick to the scene but had a tough time fighting the blaze.

A couple of adjacent residences also suffered smoke damage.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
