CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) - After a near death fall in Zoar Valley, one young man has decided to do something that might surprise you.
Nearly six months ago News 4 captured a dramatic rescue in Zoar Valley.
Hundreds of emergency responders battled dangerous terrain , as they pulled 18 year old Andrew Carriero up to safety.
That November day changed Carriero's life forever.
"It was neat seeing how everybody comes together and works," said Andrew Carriero of Gowanda Volunteer Fire co.
The emergency responders who saved Andrew's life, inspired him to become one.
Carriero said, "To give back to the people that helped me. I want to help someone else now."
Carriero joined the Gowanda Volunteer Fire Company two months ago and on Sunday he joined 20 other local responders in a special rope rescue training exercise.
Chief of Special Services for Erie County, Scott Patronik said, "Our hats off to him, he's doing a great job and he's going to be someone we'll be working side by side with."
Patronik says Zoar Valley's terrain is steep, rough and dangerous.
That's why this special technical training day was organized in Cheektowaga for the life savers in our community.
"We have experts from the New York State office of fire prevention control that are actually providing the training to us and it's great to have people of that caliber," said Carriero.
Carriero suffered a head injury, multiple fractures, and went through five hours of surgery.
A near death experience like that might slow some people down, but not Andrew. He says this is just the start.
His goal is to join the brave men and women in the law enforcement community.
Carriero said, "It's just nice to help people, I want to help someone."
