NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y. - Five firefighters suffered smoke inhalation battling a blaze in the basement of a Long Island home.
Nassau County Fire Marshal Vincent McManus says two of the firefighters were in serious condition, while the other three were expected to be released shortly from area hospitals.
The fire broke out at a house in New Hyde Park, not far from the New York City border, shortly before 1 p.m. Friday. McManus says all five were carrying a hose into the basement of the home when a flashover of flames erupted.
Three of the firefighters immediately escaped up the stairs. One climbed out a basement window and the most seriously injured was rescued by colleagues. None of the firefighters were immediately identified.
An elderly resident and a home health aide escaped uninjured.
