ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. (
WIVB) - Students got a taste of what it's like to find your way out of a burning dorm on the St. Bonaventure University Campus on Wednesday.
It took just a couple minutes and the room was up in flames, but no one was hurt. A simulation of a dorm room fire was held at St. Bonaventure University.
Vito Czyz of St. Bonaventure Safety and Security said, "We've taken a dorm here and laced the dorm room with several fire safety violations that you can sometimes find on campus. These include candles, extension chords, wall tapestry."
Amanda Koneski said, "I was surprised how fast it burned. They yelled out a minute and half the room was burnt down already. And at two minutes, the room was just demolished."
Some 40 students die in dorm room fires each year. Officials say the U.S. had roughly 3,000 of those fires last year.
"We want to drive that point home. That when they come back on a Friday or Saturday night, don't violate campus fire safety rules," said Czyz.
