CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) - If you want to be a firefighter, you can find out what it's like this weekend in Cheektowaga.

Doyle Hose Company Number One is holding an open house and volunteer firefighter tryouts at its William Street Fire Station.

Participants could put on safety gear, put out a fire and use the jaws of life.

It's part of a statewide effort to recruit more New Yorkers to become volunteer firefighters.

Chief Chip Schnurstein said, "For me, it's the feeling of giving back to the community, everybody's reason for joining is a little bit differently. Our membership 25 years ago was at about 100 members. Today it's at 60. Volunteerism is dropped so bad, and we just really need people to help us out."

Activities also include a children's coloring contest and a demonstration of firefighting technology.
