New York Firefighter Dies From Illness Following Training

BLASDELL, N.Y. (WIVB) - After a brief illness, a 26-year-old Big Tree Volunteer firefighter passed away Wednesday night.

The illness onset during routine SCBA training Monday night at the fire hall. The firefighter was taken to Mercy Hospital by the fire company's EMS unit. After being admitted to the hospital, the firefighter's condition rapidly deteriorated, and he passed away at approximately 8:30 Wednesday night.

Big Tree Volunteer Fire Chief Ed Hughes said, "The entire Big Tree Fire Company is devastated by this loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family."

Funeral arrangements are being made and an investigation into the cause of death will be conducted. A memorial fund will be established and details will be posted on the company's website.

The firefighter's name has not been released at this time.

Godspeed to the brother and our thoughts/prayers are with the family and brothers at Big Tree.

I will be paying attention to future reports, as a "brief illness" is not the normal verbage for a press release.
