The Niagara Gazette reports Roger Melchior has been terminated by the city. This follows an investigation of suspected derogatory comments made in an online forum that reportedly had his name attached.
Melchior was appointed last year to replace former fire chief William McKay. Melchior was unable to immediately begin his duties because of a family emergency, followed by a personal injury he suffered in a fall.
Read the associated links in the article above. They didn't repeat what he is alleged to have written but apparently have no question that the Chief wrote the comments. As to what he wrote, clearly there is sufficient proof/evidence (and the comments were inappropriate enough) to warrant firing the Chief.
The Chief was NOT denied his freedom of speech or opinion. Evidently he expressed both. Just so happens that what he is supposed to have written ran counter to expected behavior of the Chief of Department with regard to public statements. More importantly, the employment contract he signed stipulated that it could be terminated for no reason by either party. End of discussion.
I try to remind my firefighters about this. Especially when they are on Facebook, posting pics and making anti-dept. comments. SC is an at will state and you can be terminated just like this Chief was.
