HEMET - Firefighters in Hemet now wear bullet-resistant vests when called out to threatening calls.
The Fire Department in Riverside County bought 18 vests, at a cost of $600 each, in response to a series of attacks on Hemet police, including booby traps and calls where there are explosives.
Firefighters were often the first to respond to the attacks.
Fire Chief Bill Whealan tells the Riverside Press-Enterprise that firefighters wear the vests responding to dangerous or potentially criminal emergency calls as well as civil unrest.
The chief says fire crews wait for police to first respond and clear a scene before moving in to treat a medical aid call.
There not the first. Nor will they be the last. Just remember. Duck & cover also learn the
Difference between cover & concealment. Oh! Let us not forget our dear friend, the three second rush.
