NORTHFIELD, N.H. - Residents in Northfield have voted to get out of the 140-year-old Tilton-Northfield Fire District and start their own fire department.

The Concord Monitor reports that Tilton residents will vote next on whether to allow Northfield to withdraw from the district. Geoff Ziminsky of the Northfield Fire Services Committee that recommended dissolving the district says the vote amounts to an "ethical" question for Tilton residents. By the committee's estimate, Northfield could save about $300,000 annually by starting its own department.

Fire District Chief Steve Carrier questions the figure. He says he's disappointed with Northfield's decision.
