(AP) RENO, Nev. -- The fate of the University of Nevada, Reno's Fire Science Academy in Carlin could be decided this week by Nevada regents.

UNR President Milton Glick said he is endorsing a plan to have the Nevada National Guard assume ownership of the academy for a new readiness center, while continuing its use as a fire and rescue training facility.

Regents are scheduled to consider the academy on Friday during their two-day meeting at the College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas.

Glick said the plan is a melding of two proposals by Gov. Jim Gibbons and stakeholders who use the facility.

"It will be two plans together as a package," Glick told the Reno Gazette-Journal.

"One, the stakeholders plan, which will generate $1 million to $1.5 million a year of additional funding that will not only guarantee no more bleeding but also allow us to pay down the debt. And the governor's plan, which will allow the National Guard to acquire the fire academy site for $10 million."

Glick earlier said the academy program has $27.1 million in capital debt and $12 million in operating debt.

The readiness center would be 25 percent state-funded with 75 percent matching federal money. Congress has already allocated about $11.5 million for a facility, Glick said.

He said money raised by stakeholders combined with funds for the readiness center would guarantee the academy's continued existence for the next two years.

"During that time, we would hope that the fire academy and the National Guard could cohabitate and live together," he said, adding that the plan depends upon approval from the Nevada Legislature and Congress.

Among other things, the Fire Science Academy provides training in industrial, aircraft and mine firefighting and rescue.
