BUFFALO, N.Y. - A Buffalo couple is fighting to survive Tuesday morning, after being pulled from their burning apartment by their neighbors.
Flames and heavy smoke filled their unit in the Langfield Housing Projects on Oakmont Avenue, Monday afternoon.
Neighbor Tina Mikel didn't wait for firefighters to arrive on the scene.
Investigators say she crawled inside and with the help of others, pulled the two unconscious victims to safety.
Mikel said, "We heard the buzzer go off and when we finally got the door opened up, they were directly blocking the door. Miss Peggy was blocking the door, you couldn't open it all the way so I got her out first."
Buffalo Fire Division Chief Scott Barry said, "I really do believe that the real story is Buffalo is the city of good neighbors. We proved it again this afternoon by the fact that two of these peoples' good neighbors were able to get them out of this structure fire."
Police have not released the victims' names, but say they are both in critical condition at ECMC's burn unit.
