Nearly 50 Displaced After Newark Restaurant, Apartment Fire

NEWARK, N.J. - A fire that began in a Chinese restaurant in Newark late Sunday has caused about 50 people to evacuate their homes.

The fire was reported around 11:30 p.m. at the Happy Garden restaurant.

It spread to apartments above it in the five-story building, and to a building next door.

Authorities tell News 12 New Jersey that no one was seriously injured - but that about 50 people in all were displaced.

Thirty-eight-year-old Ronnie Mayers, who got his wife and four kids out of the building, said the fire smelled like cooking grease.
