Greetings -

I'm anticipating moving from the Albany, NY area to somewhere around the Midlothian / Mansfield / DFW, TX area.  I've thoroughly enjoyed my years in the fire service and would like to continue my involvement.  So - moving somewhere with a quality volunteer fire department is very important to me with the area I decide to live in.  I would like to rent my first year and then purchase a home once I learn the area.  Unfortunately, I haven't found an easy way to narrow this down and I won't have the luxury to visit in the near future.

My current department runs about 600 - 700 calls a year, including EMS, and is pretty well rounded.  Training is extremely important to me as I want to ensure I am working with a great, safe group of folks.  Can anyone advise me on any departments that would be in the immediate area?

Thanks for any assistance.  Be safe.

-Colin

These departments come to mind: Rendon is all volunteer. I believe Ovilla is volunteer as well. Mansfield and Midlothian are both paid and all departments to the north are paid, so your volunteer options are limited for those two areas. Rendon has an excellent reputation with probably less than 1000 runs per year. Last I heard Rendon runs an ambulance out of their station. I've trained and worked with some of the Rendon folks and they're always top notch. I don't know anything about Ovilla except they have some nice apparatus. I'm 30 miles to the west, so we never see Ovilla. Venus is the next closest volunteer department (south of Midlothian) and I know nothing about their operation. We're glad you're coming to Texas. Hope all goes well for you.

Merry Christmas!

We sound like we fit your demographic. We are a combination department on the north side of the metroplex. We will be holding interviews in February. You can complete any application at the city's web page (hr section). Take a look at our facebook page and see if it interests you.

There also a number of departments in our area as well.

Thank you.  Looked into both of them.

Greetings Mike -

I looked at your Facebook page and also looked at the website.  Unfortunately, there isn't much actual information on the department.  Why do you host "interviews"?  Do you run shifts? EMS?  How many calls a year?  One station or more?  Any more information available on your department?  The Facebook page is nice and shows a lot but there just isn't a breakdown of information that I could see?

Why do you host "interviews"?

Foremost, I have no clue about the dept or area, but a dept holding interviews can be quite common. If he is saying you need to fill out an application to get on the dept, then it makes sense that an interview process can be part of the hiring process.

Looking at the site, it appear they do run EMS as a First Responder basis with AMR being the transport entity. Although it did mention members being EMT or paramedics as well.

For me, however, I'm curious if the dept is claiming to be First Responder, and there is a contract service for EMS, who's medical direction is an EMT or medic falling under? I'm under the impression you operate to the skill level your dept is providing. For instance, as a paramedic and my dept being an ALS service I operate under the dept's medical director. However, if I volunteer for another dept who runs either a First Responder or EMT-basic service, I only operate to that skill level......I wouldn't be doing ALS skills if with that service. Wondering how that dept is set up to be making such claims as such on the site?

Good point on the interview process.  We do the application/background invest here as well.  I suppose I was thinking more of a formal interview process to get on staff based on a limited number of openings which is different than here.  In the area I am in, we are not restricted to a specific number of volunteers.

Thanks for your insight as well into the other information.

message me and I will send you some info
