Moving from New York to South Dakota

In a few years I will be moving to South Dakota. I really would love to join a volunteer department there since im in one out here. If anyone could give me tips on nice areas to live in with a good volunteer department that isnt in a city that would be awesome!

I was on deadwood volunteer fire dept and it was pretty awesome but it's in a very small town. But it is a tourist attraction.
