GREENWOOD, Miss. - Firefighters in Leflore County will soon have a better idea of the locations and capabilities of nearby fire hydrants.

The Leflore County Board of Supervisors voted to approve the capstone project of Delta State University student Brice Fulgham, using global positioning system technology to mark the locations and flow capacities of fire hydrants in the county.

In return, Fulgham asks only for compensation for his mileage costs.

Fulgham says his project would only map the coordinates of the hydrants and flow rate data would be presumed from a color-coordinated system already implemented on the caps of the hydrants.

He said the data would be available to access on a laptop computer that could pinpoint the closest and most convenient hydrants.

Jackson county (coastal MS) has already done this. I personally was the one to go around and map each hydrant in the GPS machine for our area. It's definately a neat concept and I enjoyed doing it. Even made me aware of some hydrants I didn't know were there, for example hiding in a bush or tree line. They put all the hydrants on a grid map which hangs in the office at the station. Updating is easy as they already have the initial file, you just take the machine out, map the new hydrants, and they add a supplement to the ones already on the map and give you an updated map.
Funny to see this story in another area. A few weeks ago, as we were digging multiple holes in huge piles of snow on multiple corners all over town to find hydrants...a few of us got to talking and decided to map out all hydrants in our 1st due and making a list with coordinates for TomToms or Garmins. We are planning to do it in the spring, hopefully it will be helpful.
This would be a good thing to bring to Jackson, Mississippi. A good record can be kept of the water supply system.
Jackson! Love that city.
