FAIRMONT, Minn. - Police in Fairmont say an officer and Good Samaritan who were ambushed and shot while approaching a house fire are out of the hospital and recovering at home.

Officer Chad Sanow and 28-year-old Matthew Von Watermulen were released from the hospital Wednesday night. They were both shot Tuesday while approaching a burning house in Von Watermulen's neighborhood.

Police say the fire was set to ambush first responders. A man was found dead inside from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. His name hasn't been released.

On Thursday, Fairmont police Lt. Del Ellis says the fact that the two men are home is a "fantastic outcome to an incredibly horrible situation."

Sanow will need some time to heal and will be on paid leave. Ellis isn't sure when the officer with six years on the department will return to work.
