HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. -- An historic building is burning in Highland Park.
The Highland Towers on Woodward Avenue and Glendale Street ignited Friday night.
The fire started on the top floor of vacant building and quickly spread throughout, authorities said.
Highland Towers has been standing since 1932 and is expected to be a complete loss. “The history of this building is unbelievable,” said former resident Marianne. “Chrysler executives, Ford executives – they had a bellman, they had valet parking.”
The building had been in decline for years and, last summer, DTE Energy shut off the power because the building’s owner wouldn’t pay the bill. It has sat vacant ever since.
There has been a string of arsons in Highland Park over the last several weeks, but the cause of this fire remains under investigation. Highland Park’s mayor is now putting out a plea to the community. “We need the community to get involved,” said Mayor Hubert Yopp. “If you see someone entering a vacant structure, call the police.”
Crews told Local 4 they expect the building to continue burning until Saturday morning.
