The former long-serving chairman of Melbourne's Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) says he quit the board in disgust over the entrenched culture of bullying and unionism.

Adrian Nye says the MFB board is unable to govern because of what he calls "black letter" industrial agreements and a lack of support from the State Government.

"We're talking about a history of neglect that goes back over a decade," he said.

He said he resigned because he believes if you cannot govern, then you should not be there.

"It's intractable, significantly sick. The core struggle is about control of the organisation, right down to things like whether a training tower can be opened or whether new security key lockers can be issued to stations," he said.

Bullying Claims Denied by MFB Boss

The Chief Executive of Melbourne's Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) has denied claims there is a culture of bullying at the organisation.

Audit firm KPMG has been called in to investigate claims that have been raised by the former Chairman of the MFB, Adrian Nye.

Mr Nye stood down in April, saying the MFB board was unable to govern because of what he called "black letter" industrial agreements and a lack of support from the State Government.

Unions... bullying... gee, what a surprise. As if you don't have enough to contend with all the flooding problems you are faced with. I have to say Lutan, the photograph of the side of your fire apparatus, and the 000 for emergencies is pretty cool. I have not seen this before, nor did I know that you did not use the USA 9-1-1 number.

TCSS,
CBz
000 is Australia wide ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/000 )
or 112 as an alternative ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/112_(emergency_telephone_number )

As for the QLD floods- they're enormous! I'm in Victoria which is approx 23.5 hours drive or 1984 km away. They've just called for crews from here to go up- not sure what they'll be tasked with.

There's loads of photos, videos and other info here: http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/national/rockhampton-braces-for-94...

As for the unions- I'm with you- surprise, surprise? NOT! I'm not a fan of the UFU. Many beleive the MFB in particular is "jobs for the boys" and jobs are pretty much protected. As the article suggests, there's many who beleive that nothing will ever progress within the organisation while the unions have so much power. They need a big clean out.

Is it the same problem in the USA?

In relation to the photo- there's a couple more on FFN at:
