EVANSTON, Il. - Three Evanston firefighters were injured and a "mayday" was called out during a multi-alarm fire in the Chicago suburb.
MyFoxChicago reports that the Christmas Day fire began shortly after 5:00 a.m. Firefighters arrived to find a garage fire that had begun extending to three homes. Extra alarms were quickly struck within minutes.
As firefighters were beginning to control the blaze a "mayday" was transmitted for one firefighter reportedly experiencing trouble breathing. The firefighter was quickly removed and transported to Evanston Hospital, where he was last reported to be in good condition.
Two other firefighters were treated on the scene for minor injuries.
Battalion Chief Don Kunita reported that the fire damaged two homes and three garages as well as knocking out power to 10 homes. The cause is under investigation.
