Here's some great video of what makes firefighters great.
Hingham, Massachusetts firefighters responded to a park Friday to save a dog who fell through ice. The dog was on a leash, according to the report, but pulled away from the woman walking him. One firefighter was transported to an area hospital.
Boston Globe: Dog rescued after falling through ice in Hingham
A firefighter became exhausted and required medical treatment after helping to rescue a dog that fell through the ice in Hingham Harbor this morning, a close call that prompted officials to urge people to keep their dogs leashed when near ice-covered bodies of water.

Looked like the dog new that these strangely dressed humans were friends and he was very glad to see them. This is just another reason why firefighters are heros in everyones eyes.

Responding to kalis comments:
Kali, I understand that a dog could bite the face of a firefighter as one of my friends on our dept rescued a dog in the Bow River here in Calgary and got bit in the face and it made the front page of the newspaper, but your comment really does not have to do with what I said. I just commented on what this dog seemed to think and by his actions it seems to back up what I said. Also, you cannot please everyone. Here in Calgar,y the dept has a 98% approval rating from the general public, again numbers that back up my claim that firefighters are indeed loved, at least where we are from. (Canada)

Tony,
Regarding Kali's comments, I'm with you. The worst I've noticed, including in this video, is that the general public seems to take firefighters for granted. The dog's owners barely acknowledged that the firefighter who saved their dog's life was having trouble and hardly even seemed to say thank you. Maybe I'm too sentimental when I think the owners could have rushed up and given hugs all around or something. What is most telling was the other dog owners seeming to just wander off when the "show" was over, so unaware of their surroundings that they almost get run over by a snow plow. They also could have said/shown some sort of appreciation to the firefighters.
But, that dog was amazing in his response. I actually saw him lick the firefighter's face at one point. He KNEW he was being rescued and had even begun swimming towards the firefighter as he got closer.
