A three-alarm fire gutted a multifamily house at 9 Prospect St. last night, displacing the residents.

Fire Chief Brian C. Hickey said everybody inside got out safely and there were no injuries. The cause of the blaze, which was still burning nearly two hours after fire crews arrived about 7 p.m., was unclear.

The rear of the building was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters got there. Firefighters from several towns, including Oxford, Dudley and Douglas, assisted Webster firefighters at the scene.

Chief Hickey said he did not immediately know last night how many people were displaced by the fire.
