NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - An annual "Merry Christmas" sign on a North Andover fire station has been ordered removed.

Town officials told firefighters last week to take down the homemade sign after they said people complained.

Fire Chief William Martineau said Monday that the sign was made by firefighters about 50 years ago and never had been an issue before.

The order comes a week after selectmen voted to allow a menorah display on the town common for only one day instead of all eight days of Hanukkah. They said a new town common policy only allows displays to stay up for one day, no matter what they are.

Town Manager Mark Rees said the town's public buildings should not be displaying things specific to a particular religion.

Actually I would disagree with you on this, I am as much guaranteed freedom of as I am freedom from. I can not be forced to believe in any religion nor to be judged by one. Moreover the constitution specifically states that "...no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States." (Article VI, section 3) So everyone is actually guaranteed freedom from religion if they so desire.
His "endeavour"? Wow.
Hmmm...isn't there a giant Christmas tree on the White House South lawn called "The White House Christmas Tree"? Isn't there also a Big Menorah displayed on the White House grounds also?

I'm just saying...
Isn't there also a private family that dwells within the White House as well? Just saying
Yep just chalk this up to more people who once again have made the stuff we once used to find common place no more. no more saying merry christmas in schools, not having to stand and do the Pledge of Allegiance if you dont want to. seriously. But yet we have to deal other crap holidays that are not even part of our culture or history. Its stuff like this that has taken the magic that once used to fill our days in this holiday season.Anyways I hope everyone has a MERRY CHRISTMAS and most of all be safe out there, and the easily offended people who have taken almost everything we once used to enjoy should just .. well Im sure you can fill in the blank.
"Yep just chalk this up to more people who once again have made the stuff we once used to find common place no more."
native americans
slavery
jim crow laws
separate facilities for blacks
not allowing chinese to own land
not allowing whites and blacks to marry
not allowing gays to marry...wait, you still have at least one.
Ah...the good old days.

"But yet we have to deal other crap holidays that are not even part of our culture or history."
"...other crap holidays..."? Wow! That strikes me as a nearly perfect example of racial/cultural/religious intolerance.
"...not even part of our culture"...
Which culture is that, exactly? That of the native americans that were here first? The pilgrims banned xmas celebrations as frivolous and pagan.
xmas trees weren't around until the late 1800's.
Snow for xmas is only valid in those parts of the country that typically get snow, yet that's always considered to be part of the xmas culture.
Government property right?
So long as they allow both, or any other religious display there is parity and so it's not an issue. That was NOT the case in north andover. They decided to allow only one day per display. Other towns/cities have different regulations. Again it's about one rule for all, not different rules for each. Really, how difficult is that concept?
I think that everyone should put a Merry Christmas sign in the rear window of their car or truck and park them in the street in front of the fire station.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. So long as you're legally parked.
Jack if this is true "Actually I would disagree with you on this, I am as much guaranteed freedom of as I am freedom from. I can not be forced to believe in any religion nor to be judged by one. Moreover the constitution specifically states that "...no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States." (Article VI, section 3) So everyone is actually guaranteed freedom from religion if they so desire" Then why do they get sworn in on the bible?
Wow jack, it sounds to me you have been wronged many times in your life.and your are the one w/some sort of racial/cultural/religious issues and grudges .So much is lost in words written so dont read to much into things Sir and this nothing to do land being stolen who can marry who. And last but not least because Im sure you will have some sort of come back/educated nerd rage based on your posting history. We are all far from perfect. I was talking about something based on the post not your anger towards people or government that has done you or your people wrong. But I will give ya this you seem very educated and have great use of dates, laws.
MERRY CHRISTMAS (HUGS) and I even wish you to be safe though out the year.
